How to validate a sitemap XML file
A valid sitemap helps crawlers discover the right URLs. Before submitting a sitemap, check XML syntax and confirm the URL list matches the pages you want indexed.
Validate sitemap nowChecklist
- Confirm the file starts with valid XML and has a closing root tag.
- Check each URL uses the canonical HTTPS version.
- Remove private, redirected, duplicate, or noindex URLs.
- Keep sitemap files fresh after publishing new pages.

Common sitemap mistakes
The most common sitemap issues are malformed XML, missing closing tags, URLs that redirect, and URLs that are blocked by robots.txt or marked noindex. A quick validation pass helps catch obvious syntax problems before you submit the file.
For large sites, also check that category pages, language folders, and new guide pages are included intentionally. If generated pages are removed from the site, remove them from the sitemap as well.
Use a canonical checker on important pages when sitemap URLs and page canonical tags disagree. Search engines prefer consistent signals across sitemap, canonical, internal links, and redirects.
Submission workflow
Validate the XML, spot-check URLs, confirm the sitemap URL in robots.txt, then submit or resubmit it in your search console account after deployment.
Troubleshooting sitemap validation
If a sitemap looks valid but still does not work well in search tools, inspect the URLs themselves. A technically valid XML file can still contain redirected pages, non-canonical URLs, blocked paths, staging URLs, or outdated language alternates. Validation is the first check, not the only check.
Example workflow
Start with a small representative sample instead of a full production file. Run the matching tool, inspect the result, and only then repeat the workflow with the complete content. This helps catch formatting, encoding, or data-shape problems while the input is still easy to review.
When the output looks correct, copy or download the result and keep a note of the source, date, and settings you used. For team workflows, link the relevant guide and tool together so another reviewer can reproduce the same check later.
Final review checklist
- Confirm the input is safe to handle in a browser and does not contain secrets.
- Run the tool with a small sample before processing a larger file.
- Review the output for structure, formatting, and unexpected changes.
- Use the related tools when the workflow needs validation, comparison, cleanup, or conversion.
