How to build UTM links without breaking tracking
UTM links are simple, but inconsistent naming can split campaign data across reports. Use clean values and test the final URL before publishing.
Build a UTM linkUTM fields
- utm_source identifies the platform or referrer.
- utm_medium describes the channel.
- utm_campaign groups the promotion.
- utm_term and utm_content add optional detail.
Naming consistency
Choose lowercase names, avoid spaces, and reuse the same campaign value across related links. This keeps reports easier to filter and compare after traffic arrives.
Before publishing
Parse the final URL and confirm all expected parameters are present. If the destination already has query parameters, the builder should append UTM values correctly with ampersands.
Troubleshooting
If analytics does not show the expected campaign, check whether a redirect removed parameters or whether different capitalization created a separate campaign row.

Example workflow
Start with a small representative sample instead of a full production file. Run the matching tool, inspect the result, and only then repeat the workflow with the complete content. This helps catch formatting, encoding, or data-shape problems while the input is still easy to review.
When the output looks correct, copy or download the result and keep a note of the source, date, and settings you used. For team workflows, link the relevant guide and tool together so another reviewer can reproduce the same check later.
Final review checklist
- Confirm the input is safe to handle in a browser and does not contain secrets.
- Run the tool with a small sample before processing a larger file.
- Review the output for structure, formatting, and unexpected changes.
- Use the related tools when the workflow needs validation, comparison, cleanup, or conversion.
